Shelly Bay Housing
Shelly Bay is nestled along Wellington’s rocky shoreline, offering a serene and picturesque setting for a residential community. Designed for the most vulnerable members of society, Shelly Bay Housing provides a safe and welcoming place to call home. Residents can enjoy coastal walks or spend time in the community garden, fostering a sense of connection with both nature and neighbours.
Inspired by mid-century design, the interiors balance a bright, groovy aesthetic with warmth and comfort. Dark, rich timbers contrast with soft cream tones, while vibrant tiles and kitsch artwork add a playful, eclectic charm. The project also draws inspiration from the Spilt House in Sandringham, Auckland.
The single-storey layout features four bedrooms and two bathrooms, making it ideal for families. One bedroom can be adapted into a study space, while the main bedroom includes an ensuite alongside a shared bathroom. The open-plan kitchen and living area seamlessly connect to the outdoors, offering stunning views of Shelly Bay and access to a private courtyard—designed to be both a peaceful retreat and a vibrant living space that harmonises with nature.
Shelly Bay Housing is a home for everyone.
This project was developed as part of a third-year interior architecture course.
